Are Korean skin boosters safe to use with microneedling?

korean skin boosters for microneedling: what the FDA says, who should skip it, and how a hand-injected PN booster differs. Send your travel dates on WhatsApp.

Time Return Clinic in Yeouido, Seoul

Most products sold as korean skin boosters for microneedling are injectables, such as the polynucleotide (PN) booster Rejuran Healer, spread over skin right after the needles have opened tiny channels, and for many faces the better advice is to skip that pairing. The FDA states that microneedling devices are not approved for delivering cosmetics or topical medications, and it says combining them with other products carries unknown risks. If you're flying home a few days after treatment, the practical worry is redness, scabbing or an infection that shows up once you're back home, far from the clinic that did it.

At Time Return Clinic in Yeouido, Seoul, a Rejuran SVIP clinic selected by PharmaResearch, the booster is never poured onto needled skin. The doctor injects it by hand, point by point into the dermis, with plasma 5-step anesthesia (5A+) that you set anywhere from level 0+ to 5+. Microneedling isn't one of the treatments on our menu, so this page is about the trade-off between the two routes, and about who should pass on both.

If you're weighing this for a trip, message the clinic with the area that bothers you (crepey skin under the eyes, say, or dull, loose cheeks) and your travel dates. We reply with available times.

Why do people pair skin boosters with microneedling?

Because large molecules barely cross intact skin. The 500 Dalton rule, set out in Experimental Dermatology in 2000, holds that compounds need a molecular weight under about 500 daltons to be absorbed through the skin. A PN booster is made of long DNA chains, far larger than that. Needling makes holes, and the hope with korean skin boosters for microneedling is that the product follows them down.

The target is close to the surface. Collagen-making fibroblasts sit mostly in the dermis, about 0.5–2 mm deep depending on the area. What the idea leaves out is control. On a freshly needled face, nobody chooses how much product enters which channel, how deep it goes, or what else on the skin goes in with it.

If you're new to the product itself, our plain-English guide to what Rejuran is and how PN works covers the basics. Whether Rejuran needs needling at all is argued in our separate piece on Rejuran microneedling. Most published work on polynucleotides in aesthetic medicine, including a systematic review in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, looks at injected PN, and human evidence is still limited. PN pushed through needling channels has been studied far less.

What the FDA and a 2014 case series say about products in needled skin

The FDA's position is direct: microneedling devices are not approved to deliver cosmetics, topical medications or similar substances, and combining them with other products has unknown risks. It also says re-using a needle cartridge is unsafe, so every session needs a new one.

The case dermatologists still cite appeared in JAMA Dermatology in 2014. A small group of women developed facial granulomas, firm inflamed lumps, after microneedle therapy for skin rejuvenation. The authors linked the reactions to products that had been applied while the needles were in the skin. Treatment took time, and the response differed from one woman to the next.

The products in that report weren't skin boosters, and a handful of cases doesn't make a rate. What they suggest is how it can happen: whatever sits on the skin when the needles go in may end up inside it. A granuloma on the cheek needs a doctor and time to settle, and that is hard to arrange once you've flown home.

Two routes, side by side

A Korean skin booster is a skin-quality product placed into the dermis, not onto the surface. Clinics use different ones, and I choose after looking at your skin at the exam. I'm a Rejuran clinical advisor and a certified Rejuran Healer Expert, and I inject by hand.

The difference between the two routes comes down to who controls depth and dose. If you arrive having had needling elsewhere, I'd rather see your skin calm again before I inject anything.

Question Booster on needled skin Booster injected by hand
Where it lands Wherever channels and product meet In the dermis, at each point the doctor picks
How much goes in Hard to measure once product is spread on the skin A set amount per point, genuine product at the exact dose
Regulatory note The FDA statement says needling devices are not approved to deliver products That FDA statement is about needling devices, not injections
What you feel Needling plus stinging from applied products Injections, with 5A+ numbing from level 0+ to 5+
Common marks Redness, flaking, scabbing; FDA also lists pigment change and infection Small bumps that usually settle in 1–3 days, mild redness in 1–2 days

Risks and side effects to know

Hand injection has its own risks. Bleeding, infection and inflammation are possible after any injection, and bruising can show on thin skin. The second route at least lets someone decide depth at every spot. Why that matters most on thin skin is explained in our piece on hand injection versus machine injection.

Doctor's note

I inject Rejuran by hand because the layer I'm aiming for is thin, and around the eyes or on the neck a fraction of a millimetre separates the dermis from what lies beneath it. Pain pushes injections deeper than they should go, so the numbing level is settled first. A wet, needled face gives me none of that control, and I would rather someone skip a step than leave Seoul with product sitting where nobody chose to put it.

Who should skip microneedling with a booster?

The FDA says microneedling may not be suitable for everyone. In general, these are the reasons I would ask someone to skip it:

  • Blood thinners such as warfarin, heparin or low-dose aspirin, or a bleeding disorder
  • A weakened immune system, uncontrolled diabetes, or current chemotherapy, radiation or steroid treatment
  • An active skin infection, facial rash or cold sore outbreak
  • Eczema, psoriasis, vitiligo or another autoimmune condition
  • Isotretinoin now or within the past six months
  • Keloids, warts, moles or actinic keratoses in the area
  • Pregnancy or breastfeeding
  • Recent tanning, or sun exposure planned in the two weeks after treatment

Some of these matter for injected boosters too. A blood thinner raises the chance of bruising with any needle, and an active cold sore is a reason to postpone either route. That two-week sun window is hard to keep on a holiday, and it's one more reason the pairing suits a trip poorly. Results vary by individual, and the effects you might notice are not the same for every face.

Doctor's note

If you take aspirin or another blood thinner, please don't stop it on your own to make a trip work. That decision belongs to the doctor who prescribed it. A bruise is a much smaller problem than the reason you take the medicine. And if I see an active cold sore or an infected patch at the exam, I will send you home and ask you to come back when it has cleared, even if your flight is soon.

If anything on that list applies to you, put it in your first message along with your dates: the medicine's name, or the date of your last laser or needling session. We reply with available times.

How long does redness last before a flight home?

For microneedling, the FDA lists redness, dryness, flaking, soreness, bruising and scabbing as common effects and gives no single timeline. For injected Rejuran, the clinic sees the small bumps settle in about 1–3 days and mild redness in about 1–2 days.

The clinic's aftercare guidance for Rejuran is short. Keep using moisturizer and sunscreen. Light makeup is fine from 24 hours. Skip sauna, steam rooms, hard exercise and harsh exfoliation for 1–3 days. On a five-day trip, a session early on leaves room for that window before the flight. The clinic is open Saturday 10:00–16:00 and closed Sundays and public holidays, which shapes weekend plans.

The CDC's guidance on medical tourism suggests getting copies of your treatment records and arranging follow-up care at home before you travel. If you've had korean skin boosters for microneedling applied elsewhere, pack the product name and the date of your session, so a dermatologist where you live knows exactly what went in. How long the effect itself lasts is a separate question, covered in what decides how long Rejuran lasts.

What the in-person exam decides

Which product, which areas, and whether to treat at all. We use four Rejuran products from PharmaResearch, and the doctor chooses one, or a combination, after assessing your skin. Whether you're a candidate is decided at the in-person exam.

In general terms, a handful of things move the choice. Skin thickness comes first: the eye area and neck are thin, and there is a product made for the eye area. Dryness is next, since PN combined with hyaluronic acid is often chosen for dry skin that needs hydration as well; our comparison of Rejuran HB and Rejuran Healer explains the difference. Pitted acne scars call for a different product again, covered in what to expect from Rejuran on acne scars. Skin made sensitive by repeated laser or radiofrequency, and any medications you take, also count.

People in their 40s and 50s often arrive with screenshots of clinic photos. If that's you, our guide to reading Rejuran result photos explains what a photo can show and what it can't, such as lighting, timing and how many sessions came before.

Getting to Yeouido on a short visit

Line 9 runs from Gimpo Airport to Yeouido Station, and the clinic is about 4 minutes on foot from Exit 4. From Incheon Airport, limousine bus 6007 stops at Eugene Investment & Securities, behind the Conrad Hotel, about 5 minutes away on foot, and the stop for the limousine back to the airport is right in front of the clinic. Weekday hours are 10:00–20:00.

When you're ready, message the clinic with the area you're thinking about and the dates you'll be in Seoul. We reply with available times. If a session with korean skin boosters for microneedling is already booked elsewhere for the same trip, add that date too, since it changes which day a booster can sensibly go in.

Questions we get about korean skin boosters for microneedling

Can I use a Rejuran product as a serum with an at-home derma roller?
Rejuran Healer is made as an injectable PN product, not a serum. The FDA says microneedling devices are not approved for delivering cosmetics or topical medications, and that re-using a needle cartridge is unsafe, which rules out most home rollers used more than once. If you already own a device, mention it at your consultation.
Is a PN booster the same thing as a PDRN serum?
They are related. Both come from DNA fragments, usually from salmon, but PN is made of longer chains and PDRN of shorter ones, and a review in Pharmaceutics compares how each works in the skin. Products carrying either name can differ a great deal in form and concentration, so the label alone tells you little.
Does Time Return Clinic offer microneedling?
Microneedling is not one of the treatments on our menu. Skin boosters here, including the four Rejuran products we use, are injected by hand by the doctor, with plasma 5-step anesthesia (5A+) set from level 0+ to 5+.
I had microneedling at home last month. Can I still have a booster in Seoul?
Possibly. Note the date, the device, anything you applied with it, and any redness or lumps since. A healed, calm area is a different starting point from one that is still irritated, so put those details in your first WhatsApp message.
When does a lump after microneedling need a doctor?
Firm, red or growing lumps weeks after a session, or anything with pus, fever or spreading redness, should be seen by a dermatologist where you are rather than waited out. The granulomas reported in JAMA Dermatology in 2014 appeared after microneedling with a topical serum and needed medical treatment.

Results vary by individual. Every procedure carries the possibility of side effects, explained before you agree to treatment. This article is general information from the clinic, not a diagnosis. Suitability is decided at the consultation.
